What Is a Well-Woman Exam? What to Expect at Your Annual GYN Visit | Dr. Emily Women's Health Center
Your Annual Well-Woman Exam — What It Is and Why It Matters
A well-woman exam is an annual preventive care visit with your gynecologist. It is not just for when something is wrong — it is designed to keep you healthy by catching problems early, before they become serious. Many of the conditions that most affect women's health, including cervical cancer, sexually transmitted infections, high blood pressure, and breast disease, can be detected and treated far more effectively when found early.
At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center in the Bronx, we provide comprehensive well-woman exams for patients of all ages. We accept Medicaid and most major insurance plans — and for most patients, an annual well-woman exam is covered at no out-of-pocket cost.
What Is Included in a Well-Woman Exam?
Every well-woman exam is tailored to your age, health history, and individual needs. In general, here is what you can expect:
Medical history review Your doctor will review your personal and family medical history, any medications you are taking, and any symptoms or concerns you want to discuss. This is a good time to bring up anything that has been on your mind — irregular periods, pelvic pain, changes in discharge, questions about contraception, or anything else related to your reproductive health.
Physical exam This includes checking your blood pressure, weight, and general health. Your doctor will also perform a breast exam to check for lumps or other changes.
Pelvic exam Your doctor will visually examine the external genitalia and use a speculum to examine the vagina and cervix. This allows your doctor to check for signs of infection, inflammation, cysts, or other abnormalities.
Pap smear (Pap test) A Pap smear collects cells from the cervix to screen for cervical cancer and HPV (human papillomavirus), the virus that causes most cervical cancers. Not every well-woman exam includes a Pap smear — the frequency depends on your age and previous results (see guidelines below).
STD/STI screening Depending on your age, sexual history, and risk factors, your doctor may recommend testing for sexually transmitted infections including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis. Many STIs have no symptoms, which is why routine screening is so important.
Contraception counseling If you are sexually active and not trying to become pregnant, your well-woman exam is an ideal time to discuss contraception options including the pill, IUD, implant, patch, ring, or other methods. We can help you find the right fit for your lifestyle and health history.
Immunizations Your doctor may recommend the HPV vaccine if you have not already received it (recommended through age 26, and may be appropriate up to age 45 for some patients), as well as other vaccines based on your age and health status.
How Often Do You Need a Well-Woman Exam?
Most women should have a well-woman exam once a year. Pap smear frequency depends on age and results:
- Ages 21–29: Pap smear every 3 years
- Ages 30–65: Pap smear every 3 years, or every 5 years combined with HPV co-testing
- Under 21: Pelvic exam if needed, but Pap smear not routinely recommended
- Over 65: May be able to stop Pap smears if recent results have been consistently normal — discuss with your doctor
Even in years when a Pap smear is not due, an annual visit with your gynecologist is still recommended for the physical exam, STD screening, contraception review, and health counseling.
Why Regular Well-Woman Exams Are Especially Important
Cervical cancer is largely preventable. Regular Pap smears and HPV vaccination have dramatically reduced cervical cancer rates. When abnormal cells are caught early through screening, they can almost always be treated before cancer develops.
Many STIs have no symptoms. Chlamydia and gonorrhea — two of the most common STIs — often cause no symptoms at all, especially in women. Without testing, they can go undetected and lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, chronic pain, and infertility.
Breast health matters at every age. Clinical breast exams and discussion of mammogram timing are part of comprehensive well-woman care.
Your reproductive health changes over time. From your first period through menopause and beyond, your gynecological needs evolve. An annual visit ensures your care stays current with where you are in life.
Is a Well-Woman Exam Covered by Insurance?
Yes — for most patients, an annual well-woman exam is covered as preventive care with no copay or deductible under most insurance plans including Medicaid. Call our office before your appointment and we will verify your coverage.
We accept Medicaid from all five NYC boroughs and most major insurance plans.
