Second Trimester Abortion in the Bronx — What to Expect, What It Costs & How to Get Care Fast

'Compassionate second trimester abortion care at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center in the Bronx, NY'

If you are more than 12 weeks pregnant and need an abortion, you may already be feeling overwhelmed. Finding a provider who offers second trimester care, accepts your insurance, and doesn't charge you an arm and a leg can feel impossible — especially when you're under time pressure.

Here is what you need to know: you do not have to travel to Manhattan, and you do not have to pay Manhattan prices. Some clinics in Manhattan and surrounding areas charge significantly more for the same procedure — without offering better care, more experienced physicians, or a safer facility.

Dr. Emily Women's Health Center has been performing second trimester abortions right here in the South Bronx since 2004. Our board-certified OB/GYN physicians offer the same high-quality D&E procedure — with anesthesia — at pricing that is fair, transparent, and fully covered by Medicaid for eligible patients. We tell you exactly what your visit will cost before you ever walk through our door.

What Is a Second Trimester Abortion?

The second trimester of pregnancy runs from weeks 13 through 27. In New York State, abortion is legal up to 24 weeks for any reason — and later if the health of the pregnant person is at risk. Dr. Emily Women's Health Center performs second trimester abortions up to 21 weeks.

The procedure used is called a D&E, or dilatation and evacuation. It is a safe, outpatient surgical procedure supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) as the standard of care for second trimester pregnancy termination. There is nothing experimental or unusual about it — it has been performed safely for decades by skilled physicians.

What Does a Second Trimester Abortion Cost in NYC — And Why Does It Vary So Much?

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and it deserves a direct answer.

The cost of a second trimester abortion in New York City varies widely depending on the provider. Some clinics in Manhattan and surrounding areas charge a premium for second trimester procedures — significantly more than the actual cost of the care — simply because of their location, branding, or marketing. You may find that a procedure in Midtown Manhattan costs dramatically more than the identical procedure performed by equally qualified physicians closer to home.

At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, we believe that quality reproductive healthcare should be accessible to every woman regardless of her zip code or her budget. Our pricing is competitive, fair, and fully transparent. Here is what that means in practice:

  • Medicaid patients pay nothing out of pocket. New York State Medicaid covers second trimester abortion procedures in full. If you have Medicaid from any of the five NYC boroughs, your procedure is covered — including the pre-procedure ultrasound, lab work, and anesthesia.
  • No hidden fees. We tell you your total cost before your appointment — not after. There are no surprise charges for anesthesia, ultrasound, or follow-up care that weren't disclosed upfront.
  • Most major insurance plans accepted. We verify your coverage before your appointment at no charge. Call 718-585-1010 or email billing@dremily.net and we will tell you exactly what you owe — if anything — before you come in.
  • Self-pay options available. If you do not have insurance, call us. Our self-pay pricing is among the most competitive in New York City for board-certified OB/GYN care in an AAAASF-accredited facility.

The bottom line: do not assume that traveling farther and paying more means better care. At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, you get board-certified physicians with 30 years of experience, an accredited surgical facility, and full anesthesia — right in your community, at a price that is fair.

Why Do Women Seek Second Trimester Abortions?

There is no single reason, and there is no wrong reason. Every patient's situation is her own. Common reasons include:

  • Not knowing they were pregnant until later in the pregnancy
  • Difficulty accessing affordable care earlier due to cost, insurance delays, or scheduling
  • A change in personal or financial circumstances
  • A fetal diagnosis received at the anatomy scan, typically around 18–20 weeks
  • A health condition that makes continuing the pregnancy risky
  • Domestic violence or safety concerns that caused delays in seeking care

Whatever your reason, you will not be asked to explain or justify it at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center. Our care is compassionate, confidential, and completely free of judgment.

How Far Along Can You Be?

We perform second trimester abortions up to 21 weeks of pregnancy. If you are unsure how far along you are, call us at 718-585-1010. We will perform an ultrasound at your appointment to confirm gestational age before proceeding.

If you are beyond 21 weeks, please do not wait or give up. Call us immediately — we can refer you to a trusted provider and help you understand your options. Time matters in second trimester care.

What to Expect — Before, During & After

Up to approximately 16–17 weeks — one-day procedure

Your procedure is completed in a single visit. On the day of your appointment:

  1. Check-in and intake. Insurance or Medicaid is verified, paperwork completed.
  2. Lab work. Blood type, Rh factor, and standard pre-procedure tests.
  3. To confirm gestational age and location of the pregnancy.
  4. Private consultation with your physician — anesthesia options, the procedure, aftercare, and your questions.
  5. The procedure. Performed under anesthesia. Typically 10 to 20 minutes.
  6. You rest at our clinic before being discharged. Plan for a total appointment time of 4 to 6 hours.

17–21 weeks — two-day procedure

Day 1: Lab work, ultrasound, counseling, and placement of dilators to gently open the cervix overnight. You go home after approximately 2 hours. Mild to moderate cramping is normal.

Day 2: You return the next morning. The D&E is performed under anesthesia while the cervix is fully dilated — approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Recovery at our clinic, then discharge.

You must have someone to escort you home on both days. Do not drive or take public transportation alone after the procedure on Day 2.

Anesthesia Is Included — You Will Not Feel Pain During the Procedure

At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, second trimester procedures are performed under anesthesia. You will be comfortable and you will not feel pain during the procedure. This is not something every provider offers — and at some clinics in Manhattan and surrounding areas, anesthesia is charged as a significant add-on cost on top of the base procedure fee.

At our clinic, anesthesia is part of your care — not an upsell. Your physician will discuss your anesthesia options with you before the procedure so you know exactly what to expect.

Is a Second Trimester Abortion Safe?

Yes. The D&E procedure is safe, well-established, and supported by every major medical organization. Serious complications are rare. Dr. Emily Women's Health Center is an AAAASF-accredited surgical facility — the same national accreditation standard required of hospital-based outpatient surgery centers. Our physicians have over 30 years of experience.

Accreditation matters. When comparing providers, always ask whether the facility is accredited. Some clinics that charge premium prices do not hold this certification. We do.

After Your Procedure — What to Expect

  • Cramping for several days to a week
  • Light to moderate bleeding or spotting for up to 2 weeks
  • Breast tenderness as hormone levels adjust
  • Your period should return within 4 to 6 weeks

You will receive detailed written aftercare instructions before discharge. Ibuprofen and a heating pad help manage cramping. For 2 weeks post-procedure, avoid inserting anything into the vagina and avoid strenuous activity.

Call 718-585-1010 immediately if you experience fever, heavy bleeding, severe pain, or foul-smelling discharge.

Medicaid Coverage — You May Owe Nothing at All

In New York State, Medicaid covers second trimester abortion procedures in full. This includes the procedure, anesthesia, ultrasound, and lab work. If you have Medicaid from any of the five NYC boroughs — Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, or Staten Island — you may owe nothing out of pocket.

This is one of the most important things to understand when comparing providers. Some clinics in Manhattan and surrounding areas quote a procedure price that does not reflect what Medicaid patients actually pay. At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, we handle all Medicaid billing directly so you never have to worry about unexpected charges.

We do not accept Westchester County Medicaid. For all other coverage questions, call 718-585-1010 or email billing@dremily.net — we will verify your insurance before your appointment at no charge.

Why Bronx Women Choose Dr. Emily — Not a Manhattan Clinic

Some Manhattan and surrounding area clinics spend heavily on marketing to attract patients from the Bronx. Before you make the trip, consider what you are actually getting for a higher price:

  • Same procedure: A D&E is a D&E. The medical procedure does not change based on the neighborhood the clinic is in.
  • Same qualifications: Our physicians are board-certified OB/GYNs with 30+ years of experience — the same credential you would expect anywhere.
  • Same safety standards: Our AAAASF accreditation means we meet the identical national safety standards as any premium clinic.
  • No commute: We are one block from the 6 train at East 149th Street. After a procedure, the last thing you want is a long subway or taxi ride back from Midtown Manhattan.
  • Fair, transparent pricing: No surprise fees. No premium charged for a fancy address.
  • 6 stars on Google with over 800 patient reviews — real feedback from real Bronx women.
