STD Testing

What are STDs?

STDs are infections that get passed from person to person through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. STDs are very common, and without proper treatment can lead to more serious health complications. Types of STDs include:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Herpes
  • Genital warts

For women, STDs may damage reproductive organs, lead to infertility, or increase the risk of cervical cancer.

What symptoms would I experience with an STD?

STDs don’t always cause symptoms, and the only way to know if you have an STD is to get tested.

Common symptoms that may indicate an STD include:

  • Vaginal pain or burning
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Off-color or odorous vaginal discharge
  • Development of sores or warts on your genitalia
  • Painful urination
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexpected weight loss

If you have concerns about STDs, contact the team at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center to schedule your testing.

What can I expect during STD testing?

STD testing at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center is confidential and nonjudgmental. During the appointment, your provider reviews your symptoms, if any, as well as your sexual and medical history. Your provider may also conduct a physical and/or pelvic exam.

The type of test you need depends on the STD of concern. Testing may include:

  • Urine test
  • Blood work
  • Cheek swab
  • A gentle swab of your vaginal secretions or cells

The team at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center determine the most appropriate test for you and the types of STDs to test for based on your sexual activity and symptoms.

All sexually active women should get tested at least once for HIV (more often if you have unprotected sex) and annually for gonorrhea and chlamydia.

What happens if I test positive?

If you test positive for an STD, the experienced team at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center can provide the care you need to clear up or manage your infection. Antibiotics can cure some STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. However, some STDs, including HIV and HPV, have no cure, but the team can provide treatment to help you manage the disease and symptoms.

STDs are common, and you shouldn’t feel any shame about getting tested. To schedule your STD testing, call Dr. Emily Women's Health Center today, or request an appointment online.
