Confidential STD Testing & Treatment
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) — also called sexually transmitted infections (STIs) — are extremely common. According to the CDC, nearly 20 million new infections occur in the United States each year. Many STDs have no visible symptoms, which means you can have an infection without knowing it.
At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, we provide confidential, nonjudgmental STD testing and treatment in a private medical setting. Our board-certified OB/GYN physicians have over 30 years of experience and are here to help — not to judge.
Why STD Testing Matters for Women
Untreated STDs can lead to serious health problems for women. Chlamydia and gonorrhea, for example, can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), a painful infection that can damage the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. Over time, this damage may lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, or ectopic pregnancy — a life-threatening condition where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus.
Certain strains of HPV are the primary cause of cervical cancer, making regular screen
What are STDs?
What to Expect During STD Testing
STD testing at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center is straightforward, quick, and confidential. Here is what to expect:
- Confidential consultation — Your physician will review your symptoms (if any), sexual history, and any concerns you have. This conversation is private and nonjudgmental.
- Testing — Depending on which STDs are being tested for, your visit may include one or more of the following:
- A urine sample (commonly used for chlamydia and gonorrhea)
- A blood draw (used for HIV, syphilis, herpes, and hepatitis)
- A swab of the vagina, cervix, or affected area (used for gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, trichomoniasis, or BV)
- A Pap smear with HPV co-testing (for cervical cancer screening)
- Results — Most results are available within a few days. Your physician's office will contact you to discuss your results and any recommended next steps.
- Treatment — If you test positive, treatment can often begin immediately. Many STDs are curable with a short course of antibiotics. For viral infections like herpes or HIV, our physicians can prescribe medications to manage the condition and reduce transmission risk.
There is no reason to feel embarrassed about getting tested. STD testing is a routine and important part of taking care of your health.
STD Treatment at Our Clinic
If your test results come back positive, our physicians provide prompt, on-site treatment. Depending on the infection, treatment may include:
- Antibiotics — for chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis
- Antiviral medications — for herpes (to reduce outbreaks and transmission) and HIV (referral for antiretroviral therapy)
- Partner notification guidance — we can advise you on how to inform partners so they can also get tested and treated
- Follow-up testing — to confirm the infection has cleared (recommended for chlamydia and gonorrhea)
- Preventive counseling — including safer sex practices, condom use, and vaccination options (HPV and hepatitis B)
We treat every patient with dignity and discretion. Your test results and medical information are protected by federal privacy laws (HIPAA) and are never shared without your consent.
STD Testing During Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, STD testing is an essential part of prenatal care. Untreated infections can cause serious complications, including:
- Premature birth
- Low birth weight
- Infection passed to the baby during delivery (including herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV)
- Stillbirth (in cases of untreated syphilis)
The CDC recommends that all pregnant women be tested for syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, chlamydia, and gonorrhea early in pregnancy. Additional testing may be recommended later in pregnancy depending on your risk factors.
Our physicians can coordinate STD screening as part of your prenatal consultation at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center.
