What Happens If I Wait Too Long for a Second Trimester Abortion? | Dr. Emily Women's Health Center
What Happens If I Wait Too Long for a Second Trimester Abortion?
If you are reading this at midnight, scared, and not sure what to do next — this post is for you.
You found out you were pregnant later than you expected. Or you knew, but something kept getting in the way — money, a partner, fear, not knowing where to go, hoping the situation would change. Now you're further along than you wanted to be, and the questions are piling up.
Am I out of time? Is it still possible? Will anyone help me? What happens if I wait even longer?
We hear these questions every week at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center. We want to give you honest, direct answers — without judgment, without pressure, and without making you feel worse than you already do.
First: You Probably Have More Time Than You Think
In New York State, abortion is legal up to 24 weeks for any reason — one of the most protective laws in the country. At Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, we perform second trimester abortions up to 21 weeks. If you are within that window, you have not run out of time.
If you are 13, 15, 17, or even 20 weeks — you are not too late. Many patients who call us convinced they've run out of options still have time. The most important thing you can do right now is find out exactly how far along you are, so you know what's actually in front of you.
If you're not sure of your dates, call us. We will perform an ultrasound to confirm your gestational age before anything else happens.
