In-office evaluation following abnormal cervical findings

Your annual gynecological exam provides important information about your reproductive health. In some cases, your provider may recommend additional testing to more closely examine the cervix and surrounding tissue. One such test is a colonoscopy.

At Dr. Emily Women’s Health Center, our experienced women’s health providers perform colonoscopy examinations in the office to evaluate abnormal findings and guide appropriate follow-up care.

To schedule an examination, contact our Longwood-area Bronx office by phone or book online.

What Is a Colonoscopy?

A colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure used to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and surrounding tissue. During the procedure, your provider uses a colonoscopy, a specialized instrument with magnification and light, to view tissue in greater detail.

The colonoscopy does not enter the body. It allows your provider to identify tissue changes or abnormalities that may not be visible during a routine pelvic exam.

Why Might I Need a Colposcopy?

Your provider may recommend a colposcopy if there are concerns about abnormal cervical or vaginal tissue. Common reasons include:

  • Abnormal Pap smear results

  • Evaluation of cervical changes or inflammation

  • Assessment of cervical warts

  • Follow-up of abnormal bleeding or concerning symptoms

  • Monitoring response to prior treatment

A colposcopy helps determine whether further testing or treatment is needed.

What to Expect During a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is performed in the office and typically takes 15–20 minutes.

During the procedure:

  • You will lie on the exam table as you would for a pelvic exam

  • A speculum is gently inserted to allow visualization of the cervix

  • The colposcope is positioned outside the body for magnified viewing

  • The cervix may be cleaned and swabbed with a solution that highlights abnormal tissue

If areas of concern are identified, your provider may perform a biopsy by removing a small tissue sample for laboratory testing.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort, similar to a Pap smear. Mild cramping may occur, especially if a biopsy is taken.

What Happens After a Colonoscopy?

  • If no biopsy is performed, you can return to normal activities right away

  • If a biopsy is taken, you may experience:

    • Mild cramping for a day or two

    • Light vaginal bleeding or spotting

Your provider may advise you to temporarily avoid vaginal intercourse or tampon use if a biopsy was performed.

Your results will be reviewed with you, and your provider will discuss any recommended next steps based on the findings.
