What Is a Hysteroscopy? What to Expect at Our Bronx GYN Clinic | Dr. Emily Women's Health Center

Hysteroscopy procedure explained by Dr. Vivian Roston board-certified OB/GYN at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center Bronx NY

What Is a Hysteroscopy?

A hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive gynecological procedure that allows your doctor to look inside your uterus using a thin, lighted instrument called a hysteroscope. It is one of the most useful diagnostic and treatment tools in women's health — and at Dr. Emily Women's Health Center, Dr. Vivian Roston performs hysteroscopy right here at our Bronx clinic.

Why Would a Hysteroscopy Be Recommended?

Your doctor may recommend a hysteroscopy for several reasons. It is commonly used to investigate the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding, including heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after menopause. It is also used to evaluate or remove uterine polyps or fibroids that are inside the uterine cavity, to assess the uterine lining when an ultrasound shows an abnormality, to investigate repeated miscarriages, to remove a displaced or embedded IUD, and to examine the uterus as part of a fertility evaluation.

Hysteroscopy can be either diagnostic (used to look and identify a problem) or operative (used to treat a problem at the same time as the examination). In many cases, diagnosis and treatment happen in the same procedure, which means fewer appointments and faster results.

What Is the Endosee Procedure?

At our clinic, Dr. Roston uses the Endosee system — a portable, handheld hysteroscope that allows for in-office visualization of the uterine cavity with real-time imaging. The Endosee device is designed to be gentler and more convenient than traditional hysteroscopy equipment, and it can often be performed without the need for general anesthesia or a hospital setting.

This means you can have your uterine evaluation done at our Bronx office, with minimal preparation and a very quick recovery. For more technical information about the Endosee system, visit endosee.com.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Hysteroscopy is typically performed in an office or outpatient setting. The procedure itself usually takes between 5 and 30 minutes depending on whether it is diagnostic or operative.

Here is what generally happens: You will lie on an exam table as you would for a Pap smear. The hysteroscope is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. A small amount of fluid or gas is used to expand the uterine cavity so the walls can be clearly seen. Your doctor examines the inside of the uterus on a monitor in real time. If a polyp or small fibroid is found, it can often be removed during the same visit.

You may experience some mild cramping during the procedure, similar to period cramps. Most patients tolerate it well. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen about an hour before your appointment can help.

Recovery After Hysteroscopy

Recovery is very quick. Almost all patients go home the same day and can return to normal activities within a day or two. You may have some light spotting or mild cramping for a day or two after the procedure — this is normal. You should avoid sexual intercourse and tampons for a short period as directed by your doctor.

Is Hysteroscopy Covered by Insurance?

Hysteroscopy is a medically recognized diagnostic and treatment procedure. It is covered by most insurance plans including Medicaid when it is medically indicated. We accept Medicaid from all five NYC boroughs and most major insurance plans. Call our office before your appointment and we will verify your coverage.
